Acoustic Emission Testing
The Acoustic Emission Testing NDT technique allows for real-time 100% volumetric monitoring for structurally significant defects, yet is sensitive enough to detect inclusions, cracking, embrittlement, corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and other propagating defects. It requires stimulating defect sites by raising the pressure to 110 – 115% of the normal operating pressure. For static tests, it requires isolation and settling time for corrosion monitoring.
The method allows vessels to be inspected on-line with only a short interruption to normal service. It is best utilized as a qualitative maintenance planning tool to localize active defects prior to shutdowns. Armed with areas of interest, follow-up correlation NDT can then define the quantitative extent of the indications.

Acoustic Emission Testing applications are most suitable for:
- Aboveground Storage Tank Screening for Corrosion & Leaks
- Pressure Containment Vessels (Columns, Bullets, Cat Crackers)
- Horton Spheres & legs
- Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Tanks and Piping
- Offshore Platform Monitoring
- Nuclear components inspection
- Tube Trailers
- Railroad tank cars
- Bridge Critical Members monitoring
- Pre- & Post-Stressed Concrete Beams
- Reactor Piping
- High Energy Seam Welded Hot Reheat Piping Systems in Power Plants.
- On-Stream Monitoring
- Remote Long Term Monitoring
Acoustic Emission Testing Advantages
Compared to conventional inspection methods the advantages of the Acoustic Emission Testing technique are:
- Tank bottom Testing without removal of product.
- Inspection of Insulated Piping & Vessels
- Real time monitoring during cool-down & start-ups
- Real Time Monitoring Saves Money
- Real Time Monitoring Improves Safety
