Integrated Robotic Wire Inspection System (IRWIS)
Robotic electromagnetic and optical NDE system for non-destructive inspection of steel wire ropes, stranded lines, and slings, detecting internal broken wires, localized corrosion, and loss of metallic cross-sectional area.

Heavy industrial steel wire ropes, crane hoist lines, mooring lines, flare stay wires, and subsea lifting cables are critical load-bearing assets subjected to severe cyclic fatigue, abrasion, internal wear, and corrosive environments. Traditional manual visual inspection is limited exclusively to surface-visible flaws, often leaving inner core deterioration, strand broken wires, and internal loss of metallic cross-sectional area (LMA) completely undetected. TechCorr’s Integrated Robotic Wire Inspection System (IRWIS) provides autonomous, high-speed robotic non-destructive examination, delivering comprehensive volumetric data across the entire cross-section of wire lines.
IRWIS deploys a motorized robotic crawler equipped with advanced magnetic flux leakage (MFL) sensors, optical cameras, and precision laser diameter gauges directly along the rope under tension. As the crawler traverses the cable, strong permanent magnets saturate the wire rope. Inner and outer broken wires, fatigue pitting, and severe localized defects interrupt the magnetic field, generating leakage flux signals recorded as localized faults (LF). Simultaneously, the system continuously measures the total magnetic flux to calculate Loss of Metallic Cross-Sectional Area (LMA), providing quantitative data on structural thinning and internal corrosion. By eliminating the necessity for technicians to work directly adjacent to high-tension cables, IRWIS significantly elevates site safety while speeding up inspection throughput across offshore rigs, ports, mining sites, and production cranes.
Key Capabilities
- Automated robotic deployment along vertical, inclined, and horizontal wire ropes, minimizing manual rigging and maximizing inspection speed.
- Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) sensors capable of detecting deep subsurface and core wire breaks that cannot be identified visually.
- Continuous quantitative measurement of Loss of Metallic Area (LMA) and Localized Flaw (LF) severity mapping along the entire length of the cable.
- Integrated high-resolution 360-degree digital optical imaging and laser profiling to evaluate external wear, diameter reduction, and lay length anomalies.
- Rapid reporting with digital flaw signatures and remaining-strength estimations to support discard decision-making without premature cable replacement.
Compliance & Standards
Inspections, operational procedures, and rope discard recommendations conform to ISO 4309 (Cranes – Wire Ropes – Care and Maintenance, Inspection and Discard), ASTM E1571 (Standard Practice for Electromagnetic Examination of Ferromagnetic Steel Wire Rope), API Spec 9A, API RP 9B (Application, Care, and Use of Wire Rope for Oilfield Service), and ASME B30 series crane safety standards.
TechCorr's IRWIS technology guarantees objective, repeatable inspection datasets, driving down operational downtime, extending wire rope life cycles, and preventing catastrophic structural failures.
