Online Tank Inspection FAQ

Frequently asked questions about in-service storage tank inspection techniques that avoid costly emptying.

FAQ 6 min read September 9, 2026

Online tank inspection is how TechCorr keeps above-ground storage tanks in service while still meeting API 653 inspection obligations. By combining submersible robotics, MFL, EMAT, and external crawlers, we collect the floor, shell, and roof data your integrity program needs without draining the tank.

What is online tank inspection?

Online tank inspection uses robotic and advanced NDE methods to inspect a tank without taking it out of service. Submersible robots scan the floor through product; external magnetic crawlers map the shell and roof; EMAT and PEC read remaining wall through coatings and insulation. Together they deliver the data an API 653 inspector needs to certify the tank.

When should I choose online inspection over an out-of-service inspection?

Online inspection is the right choice when a tank cannot be drained (production continuity), when draining risks mixing, settling, or product loss, or when the goal is to defer a costly internal entry by proving floor condition from outside. It is the foundation of our Online Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance & Autonomous Inspection programs.

Does online inspection satisfy API 653?

Online inspection provides screening data that supports risk-based inspection planning. Where API 653 requires internal entry, online data can justify extending the interval or scoping the internal inspection. Final retirement-thickness decisions are confirmed with conventional UT. See our Compliance Inspection services for the full code-compliance picture.

What tank types can be inspected online?

TechCorr inspects API 650 and API 12F tanks, floating-roof and fixed-roof, from a few hundred barrels to over one million. Our crews mobilize from regional offices with the robotic and NDE equipment in one mobilization, often using Rope Access for shell and roof access without scaffolding.

What credentials back TechCorr's online tank inspection?

Online inspection is supervised by API 653-certified inspectors and supported by ASNT Level II/III technicians. Reports are signed by an API 653 inspector before issue. Request a quote to scope an online tank inspection.
