Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) is TechCorr's method for repeatable, position-encoded weld and corrosion inspection. By mounting UT or PAUT probes on a motorized scanner with an encoder, AUT produces a full digital record of every scan — the foundation of code-compliant weld acceptance and long-term corrosion tracking.
What is the difference between AUT and manual UT?
Manual UT gives a single point reading at the probe location. AUT records thickness or flaw data continuously along a scanned path, with encoder position attached to every data point. The result is a permanent, repeatable record — you can re-scan the same line next year and compare corrosion directly. AUT is the data backbone of our Asset Integrity Management and Predictive Maintenance & Autonomous Inspection programs.
When is AUT required?
AUT is specified for code-compliant weld inspection (ASME Section V and pipeline codes), corrosion mapping on vessels and tank shells, and any program that needs year-over-year repeatability. It is the standard for new-construction weld acceptance and for in-service corrosion-rate determination.
Can AUT replace radiography?
For many weld geometries, AUT (specifically PAUT and TOFD) is a code-accepted alternative to radiography where the governing code and your specification allow. AUT gives no radiation hazard, no exclusion zones, and a permanent digital record — so the work around the inspection keeps running. See our Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Solutions for the full method portfolio.
What credentials back TechCorr's AUT?
AUT is performed by ASNT Level II/III technicians with PAUT/TOFD method certification, and weld acceptance is interpreted by API 510/570-certified inspectors. Request a quote to scope an AUT campaign.
