Short Range Ultrasonic Testing (SRUT) FAQ

Frequently asked questions about SRUT for tank annular ring and floor inspection.

FAQ 5 min read September 9, 2026

Short Range Ultrasonic Testing (SRUT) is an advanced screening method TechCorr uses to inspect tank annular plates, nozzle-to-shell welds, and other areas where conventional UT cannot reach from both sides. It is a key tool for API 653 tank integrity programs where annular ring and soil-side corrosion drive risk.

What is Short Range Ultrasonic Testing?

SRUT uses a low-frequency ultrasonic pulse introduced from one side of the plate. The pulse reflects off the far wall and any internal features, and the return signal is analyzed for wall loss, lamination, and cracking. Because it only needs one accessible surface, SRUT is ideal for annular plates buried under concrete, insulated piping, and tank floors that cannot be lifted.

Where is SRUT most valuable?

The highest-value SRUT applications are tank annular rings (where soil-side corrosion concentrates), nozzle attachments, and the first few feet of floor plate adjacent to the shell — the zones MFL and conventional UT struggle to reach. TechCorr pairs SRUT with MFL screening so the entire floor and annular region is covered in one mobilization.

Is SRUT code-compliant for API 653?

SRUT is a screening tool. Indications are confirmed with conventional UT before retirement thickness is recorded. Used this way it fully supports API 653 inspection intervals and risk-based inspection programs. Learn more about our Compliance Inspection services.

How long does an SRUT survey take?

SRUT is slower than MFL but far faster than stripping insulation or excavating annular plates. A typical annular ring survey on a 150-foot tank completes in one shift. Our crews from regional offices mobilize with both SRUT and conventional UT so confirmation readings happen in the same visit.

What credentials do TechCorr's SRUT technicians hold?

SRUT is performed by ASNT Level II/III technicians with advanced method training, and reports are signed by API 653-certified inspectors. Contact our team to scope an SRUT survey.
