Demag Solutions
TechCorr provides specialized demagnetization (demag) services to remove residual magnetic fields from line pipe, drill pipe, casing, tubing, shafts, and welded components — preventing arc blow, weld defects, and stray shaft-current damage.

Residual magnetism in ferromagnetic assets is a persistent and costly problem across welding, piping, and rotating-equipment operations. Magnetic fields can be introduced by magnetic particle inspection, magnetic lifting, welding currents, machining, grinding, and even the Earth's field when long tubulars are handled in certain orientations. Left in place, these fields disrupt welding arcs (arc blow), attract ferrous debris, accelerate bearing and shaft wear through stray shaft currents, and can compromise the quality of subsequent NDE. TechCorr provides specialized demagnetization (demag) services engineered to reduce residual fields to acceptable levels before welding, assembly, or re-inspection — protecting both the integrity of the work and the service life of the asset.
Why Demagnetization Matters
Magnetization affects line pipe, drill pipe, casing strings, tubing strings, shafts, gears, and any ferromagnetic component that has been exposed to magnetic inspection, handling, or fabrication. When welding is required to join magnetized tubulars, the residual field deflects the welding arc — producing unstable beads, incomplete fusion, and costly rework. On rotating equipment, residual magnetism generates shaft currents that pit bearings and journals and accelerate failure. Removing these fields is a critical preventive step that reduces weld defects, protects rotating machinery, and ensures the reliability of downstream inspection.
TechCorr's Demagnetization Capability
TechCorr's certified technicians select the right demagnetization method for each asset and field condition:
- Table-top demagnetizers for smaller components, tooling, and machined parts brought to the bench.
- D-Mag units with track and carriage for continuous demagnetization of long tubulars — pipe, casing, and tubing — as they pass through the demagnetizing coil.
- Yoke and coil field techniques for in-situ demagnetization of installed spools, shafts, and large components where removal is not practical.
- Field-strength verification using gauss meters and residual-field indicators to confirm reduction to the target level before the asset is released for welding or service.
Our crews mobilize to your yard, fabrication shop, or wellsite, and integrate demag seamlessly into your turnaround or welding sequence so magnetized pipe never becomes the bottleneck.
Applications
- Pre-weld demagnetization of line pipe, flowline, and pipeline tie-in welds to eliminate arc blow.
- Drill pipe, casing, and tubing strings ahead of welding or thread repair.
- Rotating equipment — shafts, rotors, and gears — to prevent stray shaft-current damage to bearings.
- Post-magnetic-particle-inspection demag to return components to a neutral magnetic state.
- Fabrication shops handling long ferromagnetic members where residual fields accumulate during handling.
Standards & Quality
TechCorr conducts demagnetization in accordance with recognized industry practice, including ASME Section V (Article 7, Magnetic Particle Testing) residual-field guidance and client-specified acceptance criteria. Every job concludes with documented field-strength readings confirming the residual field has been reduced to the agreed threshold.
TechCorr delivers demagnetization as part of a full inspection and integrity offering — so your assets are not only demagnetized, but ready for defect-free welding, accurate NDE, and reliable long-term service.
